Welcome

Dear Mankato East High School Community, 

I can not wait to begin the 2019-2020 school year with you!  My name is Christina Mattson and I am honored to be serving as one of your Assistant Principals at East High School this year.  

2019-2020 will be my first year with Mankato School District and at East High School.   Prior to joining the Mankato school community, I have been a teacher for students diagnosed with Emotional Behavior Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders.  For the past fifteen years, I have taught special education classes in programs designed for students with significant behavioral and learning needs. In addition to my teaching experience,  I hold a Masters Degree in Special Education and an Administration licensure from Hamline University. I will finish an Educational Specialist Degree this coming spring!  

I am committed to equity in education and providing the supports necessary so that all students can succeed.  My passions in education center around Trauma-Informed Practices, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Culturally Responsive Teaching.  Through understanding experiences and perspectives, we can make great things happen for every member of the East High School community. 

When I am not at school, I love to spend time with my family.  My daughter, Maarit, will be in 6th grade and my son, Gustaf, will be in first grade this year.  They attend school in New Ulm, where my husband teaches Kindergarten and Preschool. Together we enjoy spending time in nature, making art, doing crazy science experiments, and playing with our dog, Nova.

East Community

My name is Marti Sievek. I am thrilled to be returning to East as one of your assistant principals. I used to teach Spanish here but have also served as a professor at MSU, Mankato and a MAPS district administrator in various roles. I am deeply committed to the Mankato area and the success of our students, our families, and our community. As a parent of two future Cougars, this is home and we work together to prepare our future workforce.

Professionally, I strive to create equitable, instructionally impactful learning opportunities for all. I am passionate about building engaging and interactive experiences with our dedicated staff so students get what they need to prepare them for the life options they want. Together we can achieve the"best" possible experience for all students, all staff and all families - even in unprecedented times. I believe in real-world experiences, on the job credentialing, the globalization of education, and the interconnectedness of student learning opportunities with the greater community and world through online and face to face partnership.

Personally, you will find me outdoors hiking, running, paddleboarding, kayaking, and rollerblading with my family and dog, Luna or reading, playing music, singing, and relaxing with a cup of coffee - always with a cup of coffee. ;)
